Year 2 - Week 3 - Crusades and Food Chain Project

Year 2  Week 3   Food Chain Project
Sarah's final project
Wonderful Wednesday this week was all girl week!  They dressed up as Crusaders for our history.  We had to laugh as they were off having a "sword fight", when we heard "Oh! I'm sorry, are you OK?...I like your shield?... That's a really cool battle axe!"  We decided that it would be a very different Crusade if women had been the warriors! It may have been something like this... "Oh wow - that's a fabulous helmet...where did you have it made?", "Is that the latest battle axe?" or "Wow that chain-mal sparkles so great - what did you use on it?" LOL

We started as we always do, working through our lapbooks to begin our morning together.
Today's project was on the food chain, to compliment our science memory work.  We first did a project from education.com that you can find HERE.  We discussed producers, three types of consumers (primary, secondary and ultimate), decomposers and the difference between food chains and food webs.  Then we made a pyramid with card stock that is described (including the template to print) in the link.

Then we did a project to create our own visual food chain using felt.  (Felt seemed medieval - don't you think?)  I had free handed some outlines of various plants and animals that might be in a food chain and cut some large white rectangles of felt to use as our background.  I also got out a variety of embellishments the kids could use such as google eyes.  Then let the kids decide what their food chain would look like and how they would embellish it to make it their own.
This was what was set up for them - a variety of materials and two possible examples.
Idea 1 - Fish Food Chain
Idea 2 - Forest Food Chain
They all chose some version of a forest food chain!
The above was their final creations.  Each was a little different.  I was surprised none of them chose to do a fish food chain - after all, isn't the beach fabulous?  Then again, fish just couldn't be as "cute" as mice, frogs and hawks for girls!  I didn't get pictures today while the kids were in process creating their designs because I was too busy drawing, cutting and helping to hot glue!

Cycle 2 Week #2 - Wonderful Wednesdays - Peasants and the Feudal System!

Cycle 2 - Week 2          Feudalism
I saw this really cute idea online at http://www.parents.com and thought it would be terrific for our Wonderful Wednesday group!  The idea came from a secular book about the medieval times called Knights and Castles by Avery Hart and Paul Mantell.  It had a poem in it that I really liked for it's simplicity in teaching kids the basic idea to remember with regard to feudalism, called The Four Alls.  Here is how it goes:

The Peasants who worked for all,
Priests who prayed for all,
Knights who fought for all,
and Kings who ruled all.

There is a diorama activity in the book which is what we used as our guide, along with our imaginations, to create our feudal system diorama!

First we had to get into the mood to travel back in time....so everyone came dressed like peasants!  They are adorable!!

Cycle2 Week #1 Wonderful Wednesdays - Pope's and The World Craft!

It was so awesome to be back in the swing of things for Wonderful Wednesdays this past week and spend time with good friends again.  This was our Week 1 and we decided who better to kick off a Wonderful Wednesday then the Pope?  I mean seriously?  Does it get any better than a Pope appearance for the first day back to school???  I don't think so!

Summer Astronomy Class Completed!

Sarah's Completed Astronomy Project!

I missed some of the classes (though my daughter attended) -so the wonderful Mom who ran the Astronomy class was kind enough to do a "guest blog" for me on the final classes...I didn't want to leave everyone hanging as to how we finished up the summer class!  Thank you Nancy!!!  Unfortunately, the bummer is that I don't have pictures except for the final week's class!  If I get some I can use I will add them in at a later date - so check back since this pertains to the coming Cycle 2 Astronomy year with CC!

Cycle 2 - Pin Maps!

We started pin maps last year and we're addicted now!  We love them.  It is so fun to week by week, place pins in the locations you are learning and fill in passports as you "travel" to each new country.  My daughter loves them and it adds a great fun dimension to learning our Classical Conversations® geography memory work each week!

I feel like we don't focus enough on geography in our country.  So many kids don't know where half of the places in the world are or even the continent they might be on.  I guess in America when we call the "World Series" a baseball game among various States - it sort of says it all about our USA centered mentality.  I want to change that perception for my children and have them see themselves as a part of a larger picture of God's created world and order.

GIVEAWAY!! Professor Noggin and Cycle 2!

Professor Noggin's Medieval Times GIVEAWAY!!!

I want to share with you a fantastic game that is a favorite at our house.  It's called Professor Noggin!  We really love these games! They come in a variety of educational topics (about 37) and many of them coincide with the various cycles of Classical Conversations® which makes them even better!!  They have won major awards such as Parent's Choice Foundation, National Association for Gifted Children and Scholastic Instructor Magazine.  Each game has 180 questions based on one subject.  They also have two levels of play - easy and hard.  This makes it so you can play with multiple aged kids at the same time, which I really like.  The game play remains the same for each topic so it makes it easy to play a variety of game topics.
We have found these games to be great for covering facts concerning the various topics we have studied or will be studying, in a fun and engaging way for the kids.   We took a few games on vacation with us because they are small and fit easily in a tote and we played on the car ride and had a blast!  One of my favorite things about them is the cost!  They are very reasonably priced and provide a great diversion to normal studies while still teaching your kids lots of facts related to the topic of play/study!  If you'd like to read about the various games offered then you can view them at Professor Noggins Games.  To purchase them you can go to Rainbow Resource.

Now to the best part of all - I'm excited that one of my Viewers can win a FREE copy of the Medieval Times game - just in time for your CC school year to begin!!

They state on their website that they are capitalist, patriots and that they believe in open markets!
Their products are made in the USA.
Their products are earth friendly.
Best part is your artist can design their own covers with crayons, markers, stickers -you name it.  That was the part my daughter liked the best!

Back to School Ideas- Solagratiamom Cooks!

Once school starts and I'm busy with day to day teaching, CC tutoring and Wonderful Wednesdays - the last thing I want to think about is cooking dinner!  I hope I'm not alone in my sentiment!  When I am done with my day, I just want to have dinner already made.  Since a chef is out of the question - I had a dilemma on my hands.  How do I expend so much energy into my kids education and the education of others and then still feed my family good healthy foods without spending gobs of time cooking at the end of my long day?  My number one favorite thing to accomplish my goal of having dinner ready at the end of my day is to use my Crockpot!
However, that wasn't a perfect system.  I still had to think ahead enough to have a recipe in mind and then assemble everything the morning - which on CC days and Wonderful Wednesday mornings, was hit or miss.  So, I discovered the marriage of freezer cooking with my Crockpot!  The way it works is I spend one Saturday a month cutting/assembling and then freeze my meals with labels.  I plan 3 meals to Crockpot a week.  I also have a list of quick throw together meals that I keep everything on hand for -this allows me to quickly cook a healthy meal the other two nights a week when I do "cook".

I'm going to share a few of my recipes I use and also some of the links to website that have been helpful to me in picking meals that appeal to my family to freeze ahead and Crockpot!  I hope this blesses those who are looking for a way to conquer family meals during the school year!

Favorite websites for Crockpot meals....

My Italian Dad has a dish he makes that is a staple in my house now that I'm on my own.  I have passed this on to friends and they love it too - so I'm going to share it with you as a quick meal to throw together.  It's a variation of Pasta Aglio e Olio.  :)  say that three times fast!

Dad's Pasta
1 glass of anchovies (about 6-8 achovies) - gives it a salty flavor and it's not "fishy" at all....I promise :)
1/3 cup of olive oil
6 garlic cloves minced
1 shallot minced (or small amount of onion works too)
2 cups of spinach (or kale is good)
1 can canellini beans
Red pepper flakes (to taste)
Sea salt/pepper (to taste)

Saute garlic and onion in olive oil.  Then add anchovies and cook till they become somewhat dissolved in the olive oil mixture.  Add can of canellini beans and heat.  Add chopped spinach and cook till wilted.   Serve with red pepper and salt/pepper to taste.

Variation - sometimes I omit the beans and just serve it over GF pasta.  It's great either way.

Another quick meal that I use during our school year as a throw together, is what my family calls Chicken Dip.  I guess we started calling it that because we use corn chips to dip into and eat it instead of spoons/forks.  :)

Chicken Dip
2 jars of Trader Joes pineapple salsa (any salsa would do but this makes it yummy!)
1/2 cup of frozen corn
2 cans of black beans
1 frozen chicken breast
(optional at the end is cheese added and avocado slices to serve it with)

Just add all those ingredients into the Crockpot in the morning (except cheese - add that the last 30 minutes before you plan to serve it).  Let it cook for 4 hours on high or 6 hours on low.  Serve with avocado slices and favorite corn chips to dip!

Last quick meal I can throw together at the end of a school day is an Italian/Mexican Goulash.  My Dad also makes this one.  I've modified it a little to make it more healthy and varied it at times to make it Mexican instead of Italian (don't tell my Dad) LOL.

Italian Goulash
1 Tablespoon of Olive Oil
1 red pepper (diced)
1 onion (diced)
6 garlic crushed cloves (ok - I like garlic - it's inherited)
1 lb of ground turkey or beef
1 can of diced tomatoes (or fresh cut 2 tomatoes -deseeded)
1 cup of chopped kale (or spinach/swiss chard works too)
Pasta of your choice cooked separately
Italian seasoning to taste

Saute onion and garlic in olive oil.  Then add ground turkey or beef and cook until browned.  Add your italian seasonings.  Throw in your red pepper, diced tomatoes and kale.  Cook until done.  Serve over your choice of cooked pasta.

To make it Mexican instead of Italian - I just change out the Italian seasoning and the tomatoes for salsa - then we serve it over rice instead of pasta.

Those are my favorite four quick healthy meals you can throw together easily!  I'd suggest buddying up with a friend to cook your monthly Crockpot freezer meals (my BFF and I do it together) - it goes by faster and is a fun time of fellowship.  You will be glad you did it either way, when you just spend the month throwing a meal into your Crockpot in the morning right from the freezer before you start your school day!  Then when you are done with your day - viola! dinner is served!!!  Definitely worth the three or four hours you spend one Saturday a month to chop, assemble and freeze for the month!

Have a blessed school year!

Back to School Review - Planet Box!!

PLANET BOX
I continue to get ready for Back to School.  In that pursuit, I have looked for products that fit with our lifestyle and needs for this coming school year.  I came across http://www.planetbox.com/.  Of course, in keeping with my obsession for anything Cycle 2 relevant this year, I was overjoyed to discover they not only have a great product but more importantly in the eye of a CC Mom (ok maybe just this crazy CC Mom), they have constellation, rockets and space alien themed magnets that go on their products!  What more could you ask for???  I loved them right away!

As if that wasn't enough to get me (they had me at constellation magnets, really), they also offer a smart lunchbox guide through their Plan-A-Box, Share-A-Box feature on their website.  This helpful tool allows you to see meals that other families have planned and placed inside their Planet Boxes and they are labeled for specific diets such as gluten free, vegetarian, etc.  There is a tool that allows you to plan your own Planet Box food creations and share it with others (requires an e-mail address to Plan A Box)!  There are some really creative ideas on there that are healthy and fun - like this picture of a Box below.  Think of Pinterest for Planet Box lunches!

They come in three different sizes -their names also conveniently matching our Cycle 2 science studies, as they are called Shuttle, Rover and Launch!  (Can you totally see why I loved them???  It just gets better.)  They are dishwasher safe, have interchangeable magnets, encourage healthy eating and provide portion control.  No nasty plastics to worry about!  They also have ice packs that you can get to slide into their packs to keep their lunches cold until you need them.

So as you can see - this is not your old fashioned metal lunch box!  It is a great solution for a health conscious Mom who is looking for a no waste meal solution for their CC Community days!  I love the way that they have segmented containers and they have a unique TV dinner tray/bento box feel to them that kids really love.  I encourage you to take a look on their website today and pick out your Cycle 2 relevant Planet Box today!

This Reviewer received a free Shuttle Box from Planet Box in exchange for the review of their products.  The thoughts expressed are Solagratiamom's own and are not influenced by the company in any way.

Back to School - Warfare by Duct Tape GIVEAWAY!!!

Medieval Times is the starting point for our history sentences this year for Classical Conversations® as we begin Cycle 2, in just a few short weeks!  Therefore, no back to school thought for this CC Mom  would be complete without finding something fun to do with regards to medieval times!  If you are here in North Carolina, then I'd recommend planning a trip to the Renaissance Festival near Concord.  You can read about it HERE, while not everything is rated G at this place, there are enough authentic costumes and replicated goodies for those studying this time period to make it worth the trek.  We went the last time we studied Cycle 2 and it was a sensory extravaganza of medieval times, even down to the DaVinci invented rides they offer for kids!  We really had a great time here!
In keeping with the theme of Back to School GIVEAWAYS and the starting point being Medieval Times, I'm hosting a giveaway for one e-book copy of The Knight Book!  So enter to win your FREE copy before school starts!

KNIGHTS E-BOOK GIVEAWAY!!!

Here are some pictures of my kiddo's making their Knight's duct tape medieval props!
